3AF - January Learning in Action

Art Week

The first week back of term was art week. We were given the theme ‘Under the Sea’ and created lots of art work and music. We started the week by developing our sketching, texture and shading skills by drawing shells and humpback whales. Moving on from that, we started experimenting with collage. We used lots of different materials to create the texture and movement of the sea as well as practicing collaging the skin of the Humpback whale. At the end of the week we combined all the skills we had learnt to create two large Humpback whales, as a class, to go in the under the sea display.

Music

During art week we got together as a whole year group to create a sea sound scape. We created sounds of the sea using our bodies and then we able to walk around the circle and imagine we are at the beach. As a year group we love singing and so learnt some new sea themed songs such as Yellow Submarine by The Beatles and How far I’ll go from the Moana sound track.

Ancient Egypt

This month we started learning about our new topic, which is Ancient Egypt. We used Atlases and Google Earth to locate Egypt and other countries that we know.  This lead on to learning 8 point directions and using compasses to find different directions.

We have started to look at key events which occurred in ancient Egypt and put these in chronological order. We put them against a Stone age -Iron age timeline and learnt that many of the events overlap and happened at the same time.

English

Our new book for this half term is Flat Stanley The Great Egyptian Grave Robbery.  We have been every excited to read the next bit of the adventure at the end of every English lesson. In our lessons we have gotten into the character of Flat Stanley and written post cards and character profiles.
