3KA - February Learning In Action

As ever, February has been another super busy but super fun month of learning in year 3! We have welcomed two new children to the class and said goodbye to one of our friends.

English

In English we have explored the text 'Flat Stanley and the Great Egyptian Grave Robbery'. The children loved the challenge of reading a longer book. We have also learned about the features of newspaper articles and ejoyed reading the children's newspaper 'First News'. For their Hot Write, the children wrote a newspaper article about how Flat Stanley trapped a master criminal and saved Egyptian treasures. We learned about a new piece of punctuaion - inverted commas - and how we can use them to show who is speaking in a text.

Maths

In Maths, we developed an understanding of multiplication and division, with lots of focus on learning the three, four and eight times tables. The children love singing the times tables songs! We've also learned how to measure in different ways including length, mass and volume. We've done lots of practical maths challenges and the children particularly enjoyed the challenge morning in the hall where the whole of year 3 worked in groups to complete different measuring challenges.

Discovery Curriculum

Our topic - Ancient Egypt - is super interesting! So far we have developed our understanding of how important the river Nile was to the ancient people, finding out about how they depended on it for food and water. We have also compared the river Nile to the canals of Coventry and were surprised to discover they had many similar uses. The children enjoyed the challenge of working out how to create the best route for irrigation canals which would allow the Egyptians to transport water from the Nile to water their crops and supply their village with water. In the next few weeks, we will be making irrigation models to transport our own water.

Our theme for the term is 'We are Innovators' which means we have been focusing on the inventions of the ancient Egyptian people. One thing we learned about was a device called a Shaduf - an invention which allowed the people to take water from the Nile and use it to water their crops. We had great fun designing, planning and making our own Shadufs from natural materials found in the forest area.

Science

Our topic for science this half term has been rocks. We've learned about the different types of rocks and how they were formed. As part of our learning, we also discovered how fossils were formed and learned about Mary Anning - a famous fossil hunter. It was fun pretending we were Mary Anning and imagining how she might have felt when she discovered her first giant fossil - an Ichthyosaur. Over the next few lessons, we will be continuing our learning by investigating types of soil and finding out about how soil is permeable.

Swimming

We have also begun our class swimming lessons - each day we are travelling to the AT7 centre to dip our toes in the water! Some children in the class are confident swimmers already, some have never been swimming before and some have a real fear of being in the water, so they are demonstrating their Growth Mindset skills to overcome many challenges. The huge smiles on the children's faces are proof of how much they are enjoying their swimming lessons. It's fantastic to see them making progress and becoming more confident already.
