3KA - January Learning in Action
In 3KA, we've been really pleased to welcome 3 new children to our class. They are settling in well and rapidly becoming part of the Joseph Cash family.
We've taken part in some really excited learning and are proud of our efforts.

Our new class text - Flat Stanley and the Great Egyptian Grave Robbery by S Pennypacker - has been a really enjoyable read. It tells the story of Flat Stanley's trip to Egypt to save the treasures from a pyramid from a master criminal. We've enjoyed pretending to be Stanley and thinking about what he would write in postcards home to his family. In Guided Reading we've been using the text to practice our inference and retrieval skills, exploring the differences between Stanley and Sir Abu Shenti (the 'baddie' in the story.
"Flat Stanley is funny and a mystery story. It gives you an idea about robbers." - Alex
We have also been exploring newspaper articles from the children's newspaper 'First News' in preparation for our shared writing where we will be writing an article based on Flat Stanley's adventures.

Discovery Curriculum
This term we are thinking like innovators. We have begun our new topic of Ancient Egypt and have learned some amazing information so far. The Ancient Egyptians really loved cats and thought they were sacred! We learned about how important the River Nile was and how they used the water from the Nile to do lots of different things. The Ancient Egyptians were amazing inventors and were the first people to use a 'shaduf'. This was a way of getting water from the river. Over the next few lessons, we will be making our own working models of shadufs.
We are looking forward to building on our knowledge and finding out more about the Egyptians in the next half term, particularly the pyramids and pharoahs!
"The Egyptians had pyramids which had traps inside them." - Nicolas C
Science
Our new topic of rocks has been really interesting so far. We've learned about the different types of rocks, how they were made and where they come from. We discovered that some rocks contain fossils and are millions of years old, while some rocks are man made. We also found out about Mary Anning - the most famous fossil hunter. She began hunting for fossils before she even new what they were! Some of her discoveries are displayed in the British Museum. Next week we be writing a diary entry as though we are Mary Anning. We'll need to use some exciting adjectives to explain her feelings when she discoverd a fossilised ichthyosaur!
Special Learning Days
At the start of January, the whole school celebrated Arts Week. We were challenged to create a piece of art work for a whole-school corridor display. As well as developing our sketching and drawing skills, we chose to make a model of a giant octupus. The children showed amazing team work and were super proud of their efforts and the end results.
"I loved making Ollie the Octopus. I loved all the colours." - Daria
