3KA - NOVEMBER LEARNING IN ACTION

Wow! What an amazing month of learning we've had in 3KA!

Our main focus in maths has been addition and subtraction of 3 digit numbers. We've really had to use our Growth Mindset skills to understand column method and renaming!

In English, we've begun to explore the text 'The Great Storm' by Terry Deary...a story set on the island of Skara Brae during the Stone Age...will we be able to solve the mystery of who stole the village's winter food supply before we get to the end of the story?

November has also seen us celebrating Guy Fawkes Day, the Guys created were amazing and the toffee apples we made were even better!

The children were set a super tricky task to encourage them to think like people from the Bronze Age - were they able to move a brick from one side of the classroom to the other? This sounds easy...but the children were only allowed to move the brick using pens, or rollers; the rollers brick had to be in touch with the rollers at all times; and every child in the team had to be partcipating at all times. Some teams got the hang of this pretty early on, but had to show some quick thinking when obstacles were put in their way! Later on, we shared information about the building of Stonehenge during the Bronze Age and the children were able to link this to their brick moving challenge. The children were amazed by Stonehenge...imagine moving rocks which weighed more than 20 tonnes over a distance of more than 200 miles, before the wheel had even been invented! Historians think it must have taken a million man-hours to build                                                                                     Stonehenge!

In November, we also moved onto exploring the Bronze Age, starting with discovering the latest Bronze Age fashions! We discovered that by the Bronze Age, people had stopped making clothes out of animal skins and had begun to weave fabric. The children were given the challenge of using materials we could find in the classroom to create and model clothing inspired by Bronze Age fashion...the results were amazing!

We also had our WOW week in November, starting each day with a song which helped us come together as a year group and put a spring in our step each day. Our WOW week had an enterprise theme, with the children pitching ideas for products for the winter fayre in the style of 'Dragon's Den'... you'll have to wait until the fayre to see our end products! Some children enjoyed camping at school (although not many of them had much sleep!); we baked chocolate fridge cake (yum!); made dens for our teddy bear friends in the forest school area; developed our javelin and team sports skills and took some time out of our busy week to watch 'Early Man' - a film about a football match between Stone Age and Bronze Age people!

As we move into December, we are looking forward to seeing how much progress we have made this term during our Time to Shine activities and our Star Reading challenges, as well as finding out who stole the winter food supplies in Skara Brae. But most of all, we're looking forward to spending time with our families over Christmas!
