*Chinese New Year*

The children have had lots of fun learning all about Chinese New Year this week. The started off by reading the story, where the God's asked the animals to have a race to find out which year would be named after each animal. They realised that although the rat won, he actually cheated by climbing on the ox's back. This has inspired some fantastic writing about who they thought should have actually won the race.

As well as writing in English, the children have been investigating how children in China write their words. They decided to have-a-go using Chinese writing prompts.

        What does your writing say?

Mine says happy!

Says Hadya :)

Reception have also loved the challenges in the environment. Adam and Kaycia-Lea have used a positive growth mindset whilst trying to use the chopsticks to pick up pieces of pasta!

They have shown resilience when faced with a child and were really pleased with themselves once they could do it!

The children also decided to use the workshop area to create their own props to retell the story. They decided which animal they wanted to draw and independently selected their own resources. The children are so good at sharing the resources too and are supportive of one another.

Lily-Jayne decided to create a dragon using the transient art. She spent a long time creating her dragon and choosing different resources for different purposes. Once she had finished, she decided to make a label to ensure that no one tidied it away! Great thinking!

It is my dragon. Leave it!

Take a look at our other amazing learning from this week.

Here are the noodles. That's 4p!

Says Deyala :)

In Maths this week, the children have been using different resources to help them take away. We have been singing '10 naughty monkeys swinging in the trees' and each time the crocodile comes to take one away. They children have been fantastic at saying 1 less each time.

We've even started writing subtraction number sentences to show the answers!

You can't catch me!

The monkeys sing before the crocodile comes to eat one of them :)

Another fun-filled learning week in Reception!
