February Blog for Class

This month saw the children and staff of class 2GC show resilience as they continued to cope with bubble learning or remote learning at home. It has been great to see them every morning in Zoom assembly and the learning they have shared has been outstanding. The staff are so proud of the children they have been superstars and we are really looking forward to them all returning to class soon. A big thank you to the families at home supporting the children with all their amazing learning. You are all fabulous. The year 2 staff team were happy to share all of these amazing achievements with the Year 2 Governors - who said well done to you all.

We also celebrated the birthday of a special member of the team this month - Happy Birthday Mrs Townsend.

English

This month we had an exciting visit from Author and Illustrator Mark Robertson! We got the chance to see his studio and ask him lots of exciting questions. He read us many of his stories and he even drew a dragon for us and signed it to our school!

For English, we then wrote him thank you letters:

We also used his super Art Tutorial and drew our own dragons as part of ‘What’s your Art?’

We continued to use our class book ‘The Egg’ to inspire our other writing this month. We have been learning about Instructions and have focused on Imperative Verbs and command sentences.

 Spellings

We have continued to learn lots of spellings this month during live and recorded lessons virtually. Here is some of our amazing learning:

Maths

In Maths, we continued to solve problems using money. We then began to learn about measures and in particular Mass:

We used a range of challenges using our adding, subtracting, multiplication and division skills. Could you solve these?

Creative Curriculum - Toy Story

The children this month have been learning about Victorian toys and comparing them to the toys we play with in modern times. We discussed how the different materials the toys were made from has changed over the years. The children shared their own favourite toys and designed and made their own board games to play with their families during lockdown. The children also discussed stereotyping around toys for boys or girls and decided we can play with whatever we like regardless of our genders.

They also learned about the origins of the world famous toy - Lego. They designed their own Lego characters and vehicles. The children also enjoyed comparing packaging of toys over time focusing on crayon boxes.

Science - Animals including Humans

This month we have continued to learn about how to take care of animals and how they all need certain things to keep them alive and healthy. The children had to pretend a pet dragon landed in their garden and they had to provide everything it needed to stay alive.

The year 2 scientists also learned about caring for their own bodies with healthy food, daily exercise and good personal hygiene. The topic concluded with the children learning about the major organs in their bodies and their important functions.

 PSHE/Healthy Living/Thrive/Mindfulness/Music/PE

The children continued to enjoy their yoga and mindfulness activities including thinking about all those things we are grateful for and the challenges we sometimes face but have to stay positive and try and find ways to overcome them.

Here are some things the children in year two are grateful for.

February brings Valentine's Day - a day to celebrate and appreciate our love for others.

In music the children have been listening to a range of different styles of music and commenting on their likes and dislikes about the music they have heard. In PE the children have been keeping fit at home and learning about rolling and keep fit exercises.

RE - Judaism

The children completed their learning about the story of Passover and learnt all about Moses and why he is so important to Jewish families.

#What's your art?

The month ended with a fantastic week of art with the theme of dragons.

The children have drawn, made models, written poetry and composed music and performed their own dances all on the theme of dragons inspired by our author assembly.

This was all part of a special project launched by a fantastic rocket assembly earlier in the month.

Here are some of the outcomes of this creative week.

We had some really proud winners from class 2GC in our school on line talent show - a huge well done to Willow and Sadhana and a big thank you to all the children who entertained us by entering the show.
