3KA - MARCH LEARNING IN ACTION

English

Throughout March we have been focusing on the Traditional Tale 'Cinderella', learning about its origins and the different versions of the story. Did you know that the first version of the story to contain the Fairy Godmother was written by Charles Perrault in 1697! The Brother's Grimm version is more likely to give children nightmares as the ugly sisters cut off their toes and heels to fit into the glass slipper!

We've also learned about the story of 'Egyptian Cinderella' where a young slave girl called Rhodopis marries a Pharaoh. Through this learning, the children have developed their descriptive writing skills, especially focussing on adjectives and similes.

"I've really enjoyed learning about the different types of Cinderella, especially the Egyptian one." - Alex

The children have also had great fun practicing their punctuation skills through the use of Kung Fu Punctuation.

"I really like linking the three Kung Fu moves to make a question mark. I think about the Kung Fu when I do my writing." - Abaid

Maths

During March, we began with learning about different types of measuring - length, mass, volume and capacity. Active lessons involved the children weighing and measuring different materials. They also learned how to compare, order, add and subtract different measurements.

Recently, we have been learning about money. At first, the children found it quite tricky to identify the values of the different coins and notes, but they are now experts! Knoweldge of place value was really important as we learned to add and subtract different amounts of money, find the difference and calculate change. The children really needed to demonstrate good understanding of column method!

We have also been practicing our times tables, particularly enjoying singing along to these songs:

Science

The children have enjoyed continuing their learning of rocks, especially finding out about different types of soil and how it was formed. Our practical investigation into the permeability of soil was very messy!

During British Science and Engineering week, the children were fascinated by the development of the Channel Tunnel and thought like engineers to create a 'tracks and tunnels' board game where they needed to consider some of the problems faced during the construction of the tunnel.

Discovery Curriculum

During our Discovery Curriculum learning, the children have further developed their knowledge of the Ancient Egyptians: finding out about the lives of Cleopatra and Tutankhamun; why pyramids were used and how they were built and have begun to create a Pharaoh's mask during art and design lessons.

They loved this Horrible Histories song about Cleopatra:

"It was fun learning about Cleopatra. I love learning new things." - Zohan

We also focussed on learning the months of the year in French and Jesus' miracles in RE.

Swimming

The children completed an intense swimming course - going swimming every day for two weeks. It was an absolute delight to see how much progress they made during this time, with some children achieving their 20m distance badge, swimming unaided.

"Swimming was great, I enjoyed it very much, it was good exercise." - Stephanie
