3KA - May Learning in Action

English

In May, we began work on new class text - one of my favourites! - The BFG by Roald Dahl. So far the children have enjoyed writing descriptions of giant country and creating and describing their own giants. Best of all though, was making and describing their own dream jars inspired by the dreams collected by the BFG. It was VERY messy and we used LOTS of glitter!

 Maths

In Maths, we have focused on learning to tell the time in different ways. This has been super tricky! We've learned: how to tell the time to the nearest minute using both analogue and digital clocks; the difference between am and pm; converting between 12 and 24 hour clocks and practiced solving problems involving time. The children really had to use their growth mindset skills and especially our JC Value of Never Give Up Neiko!

RE

In RE, the children have enjoyed finding out about the Hindu god Braham and used the idea of a cube net to help them understand the concept that there are many sides to the god and he is in everything. Using the nets to make the cubes was really tricky!

Science

For our new science topic, we have begunlearning about plants. So far, we have found out about the different things plants need in order to live. To put this to the test, we have planted sunflower seeds and are looking forward to seeing them grow.

We also conducted an investigation to see how water travels up through the stem of a flower and into the petals. To do this, we placed some white flowers into coloured water and waited to see what would happen...the petals began to turn pink!

Creative Curriculum

Our theme this term is 'We Are Geographers'. Through our topic of Myths and Legends, we have begun to explore and compare the features of different geographical locations. So far we have found out about the legend of Beddgelert in Snowdonia, Wales and looked at the features of Mount Snowdon. We compared this to the Australian Aboriginal story of the Three Sisters - a story of three sisters who were turned to stone to spare their lives. The Three Sisters rock formation is part of the Blue Mountain range in Australia - a world away from Wales!

Over the coming weeks, we'll be looking forward to finding out about Robin Hood in our visit to Sherwood Forest during WOW week. In addition to this, we'll be exloring the myths of Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster and Poseidon!
