DECEMBER - COUNTDOWN TO CHRISTMAS!

Christmas Time in 4RD!

This December, we have been doing lots of fun Christmas activities! We have completed wordsearches. Christmas pictures, Christmas cards, and we even made some super Christmas snowflakes! 4RD has also had a special guest this December. His name is Edward the Elf. Edward has been mischievous, he has certainly kept Miss Dolman on her toes!
Activities he has been up to include:

  • Eating chocolate first thing in the morning (a great, big tub!)
  • Writing a poem about Mrs Nelson. He got into so much trouble that Mrs Nelson sent him to Time In!
  • Having a bath in the fruit bowl
  • Drawing silly faces on our class ping pong balls (for our attendance display)
  • Wearing somebody’s bright pink hat, scarf and gloves
  • Decorating the class with paper chains (he was hanging on the class washing line!)
  • Hiding chocolates around the class

If you would like to see some of Edward’s adventures, you can find them on our school Twitter page.

Christmas Around the World Day

During our Christmas Around the World Day, Year 4 learned all about Christmas in Denmark. (Did you know…it takes two hours to fly to Denmark:?) We learned that Denmark first made LEGO and instead of plastic decorations like most countries now use, Denmark uses wood to make their decorations. They are usually white and red because these are the same colours as the Danish flag. We made our own decorations by weaving red and white paper to make cross-stitch hearts, a Danish tradition at Christmas.

Always Learning...

As well as Christmas activities, we have also been working hard on our grammar in English lessons. We have been looking at different sentence types and clauses such as :

  • Simple sentences
  • Complex sentences
  • Compound sentences
  • Main clauses
  • Subordinate clauses
  • Relative clauses

We have also been trying to make our work more interesting by using fronted adverbials, similes and alliteration. Every day, we have also practiced our handwriting. Miss Dolman is sure that there will be more pen licenses next term!

This half term in maths, we have been working extremely hard on improving our times tables. We have been using Times Tables Rockstars and also have been completing a times table grid every week. One pupil managed to get 96 out 100 correct in 5 minutes!

Earlier this week, we have also had our Science Day! We learned about the different food groups (dairy, vegetables, fruits, protein and carbohydrates) and healthy eating. We even got to make our own mini pizzas!

"The pizza was delicious!"

Healthy Vegetables for Pizza Toppings

"I thought it was exciting to make pizzas!"

Looking forward to Spring term, we found out what our next topic for Creative Curriculum. Next term we will be exploring...

Ancient Greece!

Next term, we are innovators. We are going to be exploring and learning about Ancient Greece, in particular the things they created and invented, some of which we still use today. There was a positive reaction to our new topic and the children already have lots of questions to investigate!

From all in 4RD, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
We hope you all stay safe and we look forward to seeing you all back in 2019!
