The Tiger who Came to Tea

In Reception, we have been reading a lovely book by Judith Kerr called 'The Tiger who Came to Tea'. When we came in in the morning, there was a cheeky tiger, a crisp packet and some other food that the tiger had eaten all up!
We thought about what could've happened and then read the story to find out. It turned out that the tiger had come into our classroom to eat all our food and make a mess on the floor!

We decided to make a shopping list so that we could feed the tiger next time he came round. We don't want him eating all of our food again and we definitely don't want him to be hungry. Who knows what he might eat next? The children came up with some good ideas for food we could buy from the shop to keep his tummy full.

Then we thought about making a Wanted Poster so that we could let everyone know that there was a hungry tiger on the loose. The children drew a picture of what the tiger looked like and were able to describe him.

We also thought about some of the objects and characters in the book. Some of our children were able to segment some CVC (Consonant-Vowel-Consonant) words and label the pictures. Great writing! Well done.

There was lots of other amazing work and learning that the children did about The Tiger who Came for Tea!

We were a little bit worried about the tiger coming back and eating everything in our classroom and in the kitchen so we decided to make some sandwiches and tea for the tiger to have instead. We thought about some of the words we could use to describe what we were doing. First, we spread the butter onto the bread using a knife

Then, we placed the cheese onto the sandwich and closed it. After that, we cut the sandwich to make it easier for the Tiger to eat. Dharshan said

I have sandwich like this at home!

After we had made the tiger a sandwich, we decided to make him some tea. We put a teabag into a cup and poured in the water. Then we stirred it.

"I mix it."

Then, the tiger came to eat the sandwiches we made and drink all of the tea. The children had a look after lunch and found out they were all gone. They weren't too sure that the tiger had eaten them though and Mohamed said

You eat them Miss Boulton!

Deborah agreed

Miss Boulton eat the sandwich

I don't know where they got that idea from!

A week after our topic, the children were still able to use The Tiger who Came to Tea to develop a narrative in their play! Some of the children decided to paint the house outside ready for the tiger to come round for tea! They thought about what colour they should paint the house and what they should make for tea. They all agreed on cake. Yum yum!

Quick! He's going to be here at five o'clock. We need to get the place all clean for him.

Miss Boulton, we're painting it. You're not allowed to look yet.

Miss Boulton was so impressed when she did look though. The children worked as a team to get the house beautiful for the Tiger's arrival.

Nikola had some ideas about what we could make the tiger when he arrived:
